Along with fellow Pchem students in our department, some lab members have been working with the Bay Area Scientists in Schools (BASIS) organization: https://www.crscience.org/. Some of our most recent projects working with TK-6 grade students are about climate change solutions and “Renewable Energy Superheroes,” and how germs spread and how our bodies defend themselves. During this COVID-19 crisis, we have been volunteering to 3D print face shields for medical workers in the Bay Area and co-founded “Shield the Bay”. This group supplied thousands of face shields to local state hospitals, raised $16,000+ in donations, established sustainable model where local hospitals and schools can acquire locally made PPE at material cost. This project was awarded an Innovation Award by Booz Allen Foundation (21 winners out of 2900 applications) for sustainable effort of community support during the pandemic.
